This work was composed as part of a project depicting the four seasons, and was commissioned by the Korea Festival Ensemble.
The project began with the Violin Sonata “Spring” (2008) and was planned as a cycle consisting of “Spring,” “Early Summer,” “Late Autumn,” and “Winter,” with its completion scheduled for 2013.
The work consists of three movements, of which only the first movement, Moderato–Allegro con brio, will be performed in this concert.
The work combines the traditional sonata form with elements of the suite, incorporating various rhythmic elements throughout, including the chaconne, bourrée, and waltz.
Its harmonic progression and formal structure emerge as incidental results of contrapuntal processes, while its melodic elements are shaped through the cyclical use of the Dorian and Mixolydian modes.
This work is dedicated to my mentor, Kang Sukhi, who has been the starting point of my musical journey, and to Minseon Ko, who has always been a source of strength for me whenever I have faced difficulties.
